Artist statement
I am particularly fascinated by the human body. We recognize it as something familiar, yet it continually changes over time. I explore what happens when that sense of familiarity shifts, and with it the way we experience ourselves. I therefore work with fragments of the body. A form may seem familiar, yet resist being fully understood. Beauty draws you into the image, creating space to look again and question what you are actually seeing.
Photography is the starting point of my work, but a digital photograph is never the final image. Through photographic etching, I translate the image onto a light sensitive photopolymer plate, after which light, material, ink, paper and the printing process continue to transform it. I may print layers over one another, use a different colour or allow subtle shifts between layers. In this way, the photographic image changes through my hands. I look for a moment when something appears recognizable, yet shifts just enough to make you look again.
